Melvin Natanel Yeo

Educational Therapist/ Psychotherapist

Melvin Natanel Yeo is an experienced practitioner-educator with more than two decades of experience in counselling and special needs education, supporting children and adolescents across institutional and clinical settings in Singapore and overseas. His work has included supporting young people with diverse needs and life experiences, including youths involved in the justice system. Earlier in his career, he led a non-profit organisation focused on raising awareness of bullying and promoting safer, more inclusive environments for young people. These experiences have deepened his commitment to creating pathways for growth, inclusion and meaningful participation for individuals with disabilities and those who face social or educational disadvantage.

Melvin holds a Master in Inclusive and Special Education from Monash University and a Master of Counselling from the University of Queensland. He received Dean’s Commendations for academic excellence and was awarded the top distinction in Relationship Counselling among his cohort. A strong believer in lifelong learning, Melvin is currently enrolled in the Doctor in Education programme at the National Institute of Education (Nanyang Technological University) pursuing research on the topic of literacy development in children with ADHD.

Grounded in both practice and education, Melvin takes an individualised, strengths-based and developmentally informed approach to intervention. He believes that every young person has the capacity to grow when provided with the right relationships, opportunities and support. His work therefore looks beyond academic achievement to the broader foundations of a fulfilling adult life, including social-emotional competence, resilience, self-advocacy, independence and adaptive functioning.

Rather than viewing challenging behaviours or difficult life experiences as deficits, Melvin seeks to understand the strengths, needs and barriers underlying them, and to create opportunities for young people to develop new skills, make positive choices and build more hopeful futures. This perspective informs his interest in bridging research, policy and practice to strengthen systems of support for vulnerable learners.

In addition to his clinical work, Melvin contributes to higher education through curriculum design and undergraduate teaching at the Singapore University of Social Sciences. Through this work, he is committed to equipping future practitioners with the knowledge, skills and mindset to provide compassionate, evidence-informed and inclusive support to diverse communities. 

Being a father to two cheeky teenage boys, Melvin is able to easily empathise with the challenges that other parents face and adopts a highly practical approach when collaborating with them for the benefit of his young clients.
