Cultivating minds. Sowing hope.
Cultivating minds. Sowing hope.
At Agape Educational Therapy, we believe in helping our children cultivate their minds. It is unfortunate that there is a persistent belief in our society that our children with learning disabilities are constrained in what they are able to achieve and should not be pushed beyond their assumed limits, thinking that it is a kind thing to do.
Unfortunately, the harsh reality remains. The educational system and society as a whole will continue to place demands on our children. Not being able to meet those demands will only serve to frustrate and demoralise them, as well as lower their self-esteem. Moreover, the world that our children will grow up to participate in may be less forgiving of them as adults, especially when the disabilities are invisible.
Thus, instead of choosing to place a ceiling above our children by limiting what we teach and therefore the opportunities that they will have, we choose to believe in the ability of our children's brains to learn and adapt as well as in their resilient spirits. Our amazing brains remain plastic throughout our lifespan and barring severe damage, is capable of acquiring new information through experiences, albeit in different ways and with varied effects (Kolb & Gibb, 2011). It is dependent on the therapist to therefore, unravel the child's difficulties and determine the type and level of instruction required. This is not to say that diagnosis is meaningless. Rather, it is used to inform instructional design and in identifying intervention goals.
As the child realises his/her ability, hope arises in the heart and intrinsic motivation increases, with the child availing him/herself to more opportunities for further growth and development.
